GIS - Twenty tertiary-level students from Dominica recently concluded a weeklong visit to Saint Lucia. The students, who are part of the CARICOM Secretariat’s student exchange program, visited a number of CSME-related entities.
According to Saint Lucia’s Ambassador Extraordinary for CARICOM and the OECS, Her Excellency Dr. June Soomer, the visit will help the students understand the importance of the Caribbean Single Market and Economy.
“One of the major priorities of the new CARICOM Strategic Plan is the strengthening of the CARICOM identity and the spirit of the community and facilitating opportunities to the people of the region to build social and economic relationships,” Dr. Soomer said.
“This week, you had the opportunity to build these social relationships in the hope that you will understand why the CSME is so fundamentally important to the youth of the Caribbean.”
Dr. Soomer said there is more which unites the countries of CARICOM than that which divides.
“By now you must have realized that more unites us than divides us. Let this brief social encounter be the beginning of the Caribbean vision of refining and intensifying the promotion of the Caribbean identity that binds the people of member states together and engenders a sustained sense of belonging.”
The CARICOM Student Exchange Program is dubbed “Students Engaging CSME through Field Promotion.”
The project is funded by the European Union under the tenth European Development Fund (EDF).
