PRESS RELEASE – The National Youth Council (NYC) wants to acknowledge the eighth annual World Autism Awareness Day, today April 2, 2016.
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and Autism are both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. Autism is a lifelong, developmental disability that affects how a person communicates with and relates to other people, and how they experience the world around them.
Persons may face difficulties in motor coordination, attention issues, sleep disturbances and physical health issues. Some persons with ASD/Autism excel in visual skills, music, math and art.
There is a dire need to increase acceptance, respect and support of our fellow Saint Lucians who are faced with this disability. The NYC stands firm in its belief that every youth regardless of ability, background, religion, gender etc deserves the chance to fulfill their greatest potential.
That they should have equal opportunity free from discrimination. We reaffirm our dedication to ensuring that as our country develops, policy makers and implementers, will take into consideration persons with disabilities.
We encourage others to participate with us as we help light the world up blue this April. Please share your experiences across social media and use hashtag (light it up blue). Also share pictures of you proudly wearing the official bright royal blue colour for National Autism Awareness Month. Let us all show tremendous support towards persons living with Autism.
