PRESS RELEASE – Approximately sixty students from various learning institutions around the island will be introduced to the importance, careers in and benefits of science and technology at the second annual National Science and Technology Summer Camp from August 17- 21, 2015
The Ministry of Sustainable Development, Energy, Science and Technology through its Energy, Science and Technology Section will be hosting the week long camp at the Orchid Gardens Conference facility in Union, under the theme: “Paving the Way for Sustainable Energy in Saint Lucia”.
The Science and Technology Summer Camp will be facilitated by Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Smith, founders of IT Kidz USA. IT Kidz USA have been in existence since 2005 and have been involved with offering courses and camps which include Rocketry & Space; Environmental Science; Renewable Energy; Robotics Engineering; Video Game Design and a full complement of Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
The target group for this activity is form three students. Special invitations were extended to two (2) students from every Secondary School (both public and private) on the island. Students were nominated by the various school principals.
In recent years, concerns have been raised about the low level of interest shown in Science and Technology subjects, particularly among students of the secondary and tertiary levels in Saint Lucia.
In addition, teachers continue to voice concern and even apprehension about the diminishing number of students who select the Science and Technology stream for further study.
This problem is not unique to Saint Lucia as there appears to be a regional and even global move of students towards business and accounting subject areas.
In an effort to address this and other potential problems, the National Science and Technology Summer Camp will afford students the opportunity to learn principles of Science and Technology in an enjoyable, interactive and collaborative manner.
Specific areas addressed throughout the duration of the Camp include renewable energy sources and project development, with wind energy resource forming the main area of focus.
Students will be exposed to concepts of and receive instruction on areas such as measuring wind, wind technologies, wind turbulence and careers in the wind sector among others. The students are also scheduled to pay a site visit to the wind test tower in Dennery.
At the end of the Camp, students will be given the opportunity to showcase their project ideas to members of the public and private sector in the form of an exhibition.
The Camp promises to be grand, exciting and spectacular, as the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Energy, Science and Technology transforms Saint Lucia, one student at a time, through Science and Technology.
