Students attending the Micoud Secondary School will be temporarily relocated to facilitate the completion of repairs to the building.

A fire suspected to be of electric origin damaged parts of the school’s roof and the Learning Resource Centre on October 11.

Chief Education Officer (CEO) Marcus Edward said the temporary relocation is necessary so that students can commence their academic studies for the new school term.

Edward told St. Lucia News Online (SNO) that though the process would require lots of planning and preparation, the ministry is looking to have the relocation happen by Monday, January 12.

Students of forms three, four and five will be relocated to the Anse Ger Secondary School, while students of forms one and two will be relocated to the Micoud Primary School.

Both schools will also be placed on shift systems.

Edward told SNO that the relocation should last about three weeks or more, based on how fast work is completed.

The CEO met with teachers of the Micoud Secondary School yesterday to discuss the option. He will also be meeting with parents of Micoud Primary School at 1 p.m on Thursday and at 4 p.m. with parents of Micoud Secondary School.

Edward said because of the nature of the materials used in the construction of the school, which was built many years ago, restoration works took longer than the team had planned to have it completed.

“It has taken us sometime because the material was just not contained in that area, the fire spread to various parts in the ceiling and to the administrative building,” he added.

Based on the instructions from the Ministry of Labour and the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA), contractors have been taking their time to repair the ceiling properly.

At the completion of repairs, CARPHA will have to approve an air-quality test before the school is allowed to re-open.
