PRESS RELEASE - School can be pretty challenging and with the continuous pressure to do well, a comfortable environment not only makes learning easier, but also increases productivity and creativity.
During the rainy season and on rainy days it becomes a problem for the school community at the Grande Riviere Primary School to move from one building to another as there is no connectivity between the buildings. This hinders many an activity as well as the effective operation of the school.
Thanks to a $10,000 grant and the support of the CFL volunteers, this will soon change for the Grande Primary School who are the, Zone D winners of the Unity in Community Programme.The construction of a Walk-under roof to connect the two buildings which house the Grande Riviere Primary School will make life easier for the parents, teachers, students and community groups who use the school.
Last week, CFL volunteers, accompanied by Officers of the Babonneau and Gros-Islet Police stations, carpenters from the National Housing Corporation , parents and teachers of the school could be seen hard at work on the school premises – hand digging holes for the columns, tying steel, mixing concrete and beginning the casting work.
An elated school principal Mauricia Francis says she was touched by the display of selflessness and commitment to this project by CFL.
She said, “When we learned that we were the winners of Zone D in the Super J Unity in Community Progamme we were very excited. The Walk-Under Roof is a project that my teachers have been speaking about and thanks to the $10,000 grant from CFL and the added volunteer support it will now be a reality.”
CFL’s Managing Director Martin Dorville who led the volunteer team says that when Unity in the Community Programme was created, the intention was to add value to the lives of people in communities across Saint Lucia.
“The Grande Riviere school project is a perfect example of Unity in Community, with CFL volunteers working together with parents and teachers of the school, people of the community as well as the Police. We came together and put our hands and hearts into this project. This shows how much we can achieve when we combine our efforts. When this project is complete, the smiles on the faces of the community especially students will be worth the sweat and aching arms which such activities bring.”
Super J IGA’s Unity in Community Programme continues to make its mark in communities cross Saint Lucia by providing financial support and voluntary services to projects geared at enriching lives and improving communities. The Programme was launched as part of CFL’s tenth anniversary celebrations. It places emphasis on community building through volunteerism.
The final zone, Castries (Zone E) was launched at the start of October and the final date for proposals to be submitted into CFL is Monday November 3rd.
