PRESS RELEASE – On Friday 29th April, the Balata Primary School held its second annual “Balata Rising Stars” singing competition.
The show was spearheaded and funded by the school’s music teacher Arthur Allain, the reigning groovy monarch of St. Lucia. This year’s event featured 10 talented students of the school, singing various songs of different genres of music, ranging from soca to R&B and hip-hop.
Emerging from a series of auditions, were Zaccheus Estephane, Kevon James and Alfonzo JnPierre of grade 6, Nathan Alexander, Shania Menal, and Demario Lendor of grade 5, Bianca Leon, Twyla David and Marcus Paul of grade 4, and Deshawn Charles of grade 3.
This year Marcus Paul was triumphant in capturing the first place trophy and the prize of a Kindle Fire tablet, for his spectacular performance of “Drag me down”.
Following close by in second place was Kevon James, and Alfonzo JnPierre in 3rd place. The students all received a certificate for their participation and commitment to the competition, and for enduring a vigorous performance-training program over a two-month period.
Part of the show was also to provide the students with exposure to professional local artistes with the likes of St. Lucian stars Ezra d’FunMachine, Michael Robinson, Kisha as well as groovy monarch Arthur Allain all treating the students to dynamic performances. The artistes also willingly donated their time to signing autographs for the flocking students/fans.
The school’s fund raising committee was once again also able to put together assistance, by providing an amazing
fair atmosphere to allow for an enjoyable experience for the students of the school.
Upon interviewing organizer Mr. Allain, he lamented that the mantra of the event is to continually provide a platform for aspiring singers at the school to perform in front of an audience and develop their performance skills, as well as raising funds to purchase equipment for the school.
The show was thoroughly enjoyed by students and teachers as well as the supportive parents who turned out to support the young talent. The school is hoping that with the aid of further sponsorship the competition can be taken to a wider audience in the coming years.
